The Tomb of SIR THOMAS BULLEN @ St Peter’s Church in HEVER
As I was already at Hever Castle in Kent for their 1940’s Homefront Event, I took the opportunity to re-visit St Peter’s Church next to the Castle. Dating back to the 12th Century (although on the Site of an earlier Norman Structure), it has been a Place of Worship for over 875 years. The Church also contains the Tomb of Sir Thomas Bullen, Father of Anne Boleyn and Grandfather of Queen Elizabeth the First.

    I went to Newhaven Fort a few years ago, it was a warm sunny day and I'd just toured the tunnels. My friend and I then looked into the other buildings off the square. One building was rigged out as an operations room, a glass partition preventing the public from touching the mapped table. Two pendant lights hung from the metal beams, very still and one either side of the mock up room behind the glass. One light began to swing like a pendulum, swinging round and round. The other light was perfectly still. I looked at this light and asked ( in my mind) can you swing the other way please, and it did. I thanked it and turned to find my friend hightailing it out the door!

      @@jeanblemings5352 Thanks Jean,. According to that Wiki - ''Due to the irregularity of English spelling at this period, the name in documents is also spelled Bulleyn or Bullen. It has been suggested that the surname "Boleyn" was originally pronounced as "Boulogne", owing the idea of a French origin for the Family''.

    Hey Marq, great video, my friend. I must go to Hever Castle one day. When we are at an event, it's impossible not to capture the music. The only way around it is to mute our audio on the video and put our own music on. But for me, it takes away from the event what others are enjoying.

    The Mole loses water due to the river disappearing down very small pipe-like hollows (swallows) in the chalk of its banks. This only occurs in limestone rocks of which chalk is a form. Daniel Defoe observed that the water lost down the swallows returned to the river as it approached Leatherhead in "thousands of little springs". I bet you found one of these swallow springs..

    Any idea how the town got the name Leatherhead? That is what they called our early US football players as their helmets were made of leather. My very own Grandpa was a leatherhead back in the day in the original Salem Village, now Danvers, Massachusetts.

    • @markalienhead1944
      @markalienhead1944 14 днів тому

      The name "Leatherhead" has its origins in the Anglo-Saxon period. The most widely accepted theory is that the name derives from the Old English words "leodridan" or "leodrida," which roughly translates to "place where people ride" or "place where people can cross (a river)." The town is situated near a natural crossing point of the River Mole, which would have been significant in the early development and naming of the settlement. Over the centuries, the name evolved through various forms, including "Leret," "Lereda," and "Ledred," before eventually becoming "Leatherhead." The evolution of the name reflects the changes in language and pronunciation over time. Therefore, Leatherhead's name is closely linked to its geographic location and historical significance as a crossing point.

    Oh! I got interested in this because we went to Polesden Lacey when I was young! (5-8 yrs old)And I remember - well it’s funny what you remember- that it was full of paintings & furniture. ( but not like other stately homes much more Victorian and gilded)And I remember that white tower too! And then you said at the beginning Bookham & I heard my dad saying it- never heard it mentioned before - it’s amazing how 1 word can set your memory off. And I thought Bookham - Dad was always talking about Bookham - to do with his job I should imagine ( have to ask my sister) &Wrotham too. And then in the car you produce our book- well we have a copy too! And then in the church it was the hatchments. I remember going in a church and seeing several hatchments & the explanation thereof. Must have been that church!As we had seen them usually near the main door of the churches on our travels & none of us were aware of their significance. So very enjoyable video - just been talking about yews on site I sub to as well. I was explaining that there is absolutely no legislation to protect ancient yews. They are prob.older than the estimates - they are the oldest still living entities and they seem to be deliberately ignored! They have no protection & Janis Fry et al are fighting for them to be protected - anybody can chop them down like that sycamore last year. And that is why that church has,off their own bat,erected some sort of protection. Apparently if the church wants to cut them down because they think they are dangerous they can🙁 & can employ anyone not even a proper tree surgeon!! They are precious & we have lost so many to ignorance. Thanks Marq.
